P2 : focus of a radio station
research and populate this post telling use about the different types of programming, detailing their purpose, who they would be aimed at and how they can vary from other forms of programming.
purpose
educational ~ the purpose is to educate the listener e.g. radio documentary, lbc
inform ~ the presenter is there to inform the listener on information e.g. weather, traffic
promote ~ is the reason of the show to promote a service or product
income
this depends on the type of radio station, like if it is commercial or public, as this would be their way of receiving money, as public would get this from the government and commercial would get from promoting advertisements.
scheduling
depending on when your radio production is being broadcasted will have am effect on how the show may be structured. the timings can include:
breakfast - weather for the day
daytime - talk shows, music, traffic, more weather, news
drive time - talk shows, music, traffic, weather changes
evening - news that happened during the day,
overnight - possibly covering the same news that happened in the day, music
content
what the radio will be about. could literally be anything but can include:
music - the music will relate to the radio station, for example heart 80s will more than likely play 80s music.
news - near enough every stations news sector is similar or the same, or some will have news based around what their target audience will want to hear.
weather - this is self explanatory, simply just the presenters talking about how the weather likely would be in the coming hours.
dialogue - this is usually just the presenters giving general chit chat, or talking about any of the other content usually in the radio show
phone ins - the phone ins are often members of the audience calling up the station to talk about a specific topic.
dramatisations - these are mainly soap operas but in radio form. a prime example of this is BBC radio's The Archers which first aired in 1950 and is still going, which is longer than coronation street which aired in 1960.
staff and resources
who will be in the production:
- presenter: the person who is usually the 'voice' of the radio station
- producers: the people behind the creation of the station
- other team members e.g. newsreader, sports
what will they have available for the production:
- if live music is involved will they have instruments
- specifically need microphones and the equipment to make the audio sound as good as possible.
